Newport RI

Newport was a center for trade with China and the whaling industry in the early 1800's. The city has a history going back to colonial times, when it was an early center for shipbuilding and trading and the birthplace of the U.S. Navy. The city became a summer home for many of the most wealthy families in the United States beginning in the mid-1800's; and that "Gilded Age" continued until World War I.
