Not a typical New York Chinese Restaurant
There is the latest venture of Jean Georges Vongerichten.
The cocktails "ginger marja-rita" made with sauza tres anejo tequila, lime, fresh ginger and ginger salt, or a kumquat mojito, concocted from Bacardi, sparkling mint leaves, and whole fresh kumquats, both smooth and deceptively potent.
First, the "Cold Sesame Nooldes" uses rice vermicelli noodles instead of thicker noodles and there's a gob of peanut butter in there somewhere. I tried to mix it the best I could, but the peanut butter was very hard to distribute evenly; ended up with some bites that were very peanut-butter-y.
The because pork buns was good, but not spectacular. Next up was the "Lobster E-Fu Noodles with Green Chili". The lobsters were really tough, but the noodles tasted pretty good. The green chili provided a surprising and welcomed kick to it, but I wished they put in a little bit more.
Then it was "Chinese Long Beans with Black Bean Sauce", not spectacular. Next up, "Beef Shortribs Glazed with Red Wine & Aged Soy" came with some small steam buns. The meat was extremely tender, but it was a boring dish. The taste was monotonous.
Ironically, the ended up of the meal was the desserts, which weren't Chinese. "Warm Chocolate Cake with Coconut Sorbet" warm, moist chocolate cakes was delicious. "Passion Sorbet" are served in a tiny chinese take-out boxes. Along with the bill, we’re given a pair of homemade, chocolate flavored fortune cookies with clever messages, a cute take on a standard that demonstrates this restaurant’s attention to detail.
